The Sing-Sew Extension Club was organized at June Larson’s home in September 1949. They had 24 members and a waiting list! Jerauld County had 21 Extension Clubs in the 1950s and 60s.
In the 1950-60s the club had a style show and presented a play “Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow” and served the Jaycee Banquet for fundraisers. They gave a donation to Memorial Hospital for an incubator, donated to 4-H Camp and Senior Citizens. They gave Christmas gifts to students at SD Training School and Yankton State Hospital.
In the 1970s and 80s they sold lunch at the Annual Craft Fair and Farmer’s Night Banquet for fundraisers. The Singing Human Flag was organized in 1974. They performed at the Centennial and parades, etc. The club had county lessons in Making Lingerie by Norma Budahl, Crocheting by Donna Satter and Candle-wicking by Darleen Cuppy. They made May Baskets for Weskota Manor and donated to the 4-H Fund and held Kidney Fund Drives.
In the 1990’s our members made tote bags and centerpieces for State Convention in Huron in 1991 and 1997. Darlene Peterson and Darleen Cuppy attended the National Extension Convention in Bismarck, ND in 1998. The club’s 50th year was honored at State Convention in Chamberlain September 1999. They hosted a social event for former members in the Ag Building.
In the 2000’s the Sing-Sew Club helped host the State Convention in Huron in 2003 and 2008. The Human Flag performed for CFEL’s 75th birthday party in September 2013. Cheryl Kleppin was elected State President in 2008 and re-elected in 2011. The club continued to make May Baskets for the Manor and Kindergarten class, lead Bingo at the Manor, decorated a float for Homecoming parade and decorated a Christmas tree at the Court House display.
The club celebrated 60 years in 2009 with a special poem Pat Mettler wrote and a cake Darleen Cuppy made. Darleen Cuppy was elected State CFEL Secretary in 2013 and re-elected in 2016.
Sing-Sew CFEL club was honored for 70 years at State CFEL Convention in Spearfish September 21, 2019. They continue to make May Baskets; 40 for Weskota Manor and 20 for the Kindergarten class, decorate a tree at the Court House, donate to Post Prom, 4-H Fund and Blue Bag Nutrition. Peg Olson and Pam Hainy have presented craft projects, Sherry Kleppin gave a class on crocheting to some teachers, Donna Satter, Pam Hainy and Darleen Cuppy have been Monitors for 4-H Achievement Day. Pat Mettler is our Reading Chairman.
The club helped with State Convention in Huron in 2013 and 2018. They have six active members. Darleen Cuppy President, Pat Mettler Vice President, Sherry Kleppin Secretary and Pam Hainy Treasurer, Donna Satter and Peg Olson. Sing-Sew Club is the only club in Jerauld County now.
