True Dakotan  Reporter/Graphic Designer Cam Fagerhaug (above left) and Editor/Publisher Kristi Hine hold award certificates the newspaper recently won in the South Dakota Newspaper Association contest, including four first-place awards. 

The True Dakotan brought home 11 news/editorial and advertising awards from South Dakota Newspaper Association’s annual contest. The contest spotlights some of the best work done by newspapers across the state.

The results were announced on May 14 during an online virtual meeting with SDNA members because the association’s annual convention was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fagerhaug and Hine won in a variety of categories:

Cam Fagerhaug: 1st place, Best Lede - Rally for Fair Markets;  1st place, Best Spot News Photo - Mother Nature Meets Her Match; 2nd place, Best Series Ad Idea - Springs Inn Fresh series; 2nd place, Best Feature Story  - More than a brand; 2nd place, Best News Series Weather - Wrought Calving Season Tests Ranchers.

Kristi Hine: 1st place, Best Local Government Story - Concerned Citizens Fill City Hall; 1st place, Best Typography & Design – True Dakotan newspaper; 2nd place, Best Portrait Photo - Reed Engle Begins as WS Postmaster; 3rd place, Best Photo Series – Independence Day Parade; 3rd place Best Spot News Photo – A Heartfelt Student Salute; 3rd place Best Sports Photo – Red, White, Blue and Barrels.
