Music, laughter and the aroma of grilled burgers and brats filled the fire hall as hundreds of community members and visitors to town showed their support for the Wessington Springs Volunteer Fire Department last Saturday.

“We are very happy with the turnout,” said Fire Chief Jim Vavra, about the more than 400 people who gathered for the inaugural event. “We are so fortunate to have the community’s support and want to express our thanks to all who attended.”

In lieu of holding a street dance as it had for many decades past, the fire department tried out a new event this year, the First Annual Firemen’s Fun Fest. The event served as a fundraiser to help fund necessary equipment and operational costs throughout the year.
