Delivering happiness: Local business, 4-Hers help spread smiles
A welcome dose of cheer made its way around town this week, thanks to 48 special floral bouquets that Baker’s Design created and delivered with the help of local 4-Hers.

Laura Baker of Baker’s Design joined thousands of Teleflora local member florists across the country for Make Someone Smile® Week. Florists volunteer their time to create and deliver the “Be Happy® Bouquets to those in need of a smile.

Baker worked with her wholesalers and growers in the area to secure flower donations and with the help of the Jerauld/Buffalo 4-H Club, created and distributed the Be Happy® Bouquets.

“The kids did an incredible job,” Baker said. “They created 48 arrangements in just an hour.”

After the arrangements were made, Baker spread the joy by delivering flowers to Weskota Manor Avera. She said that she looks forward to this week each year because of the response she gets from bouquet recipients. And after the challenges of 2020, Baker said she felt even more compelled to carry on the tradition of Make Someone Smile® Week.

“It’s been a rough year for so many and with Covid restrictions, it’s been especially tough on nursing home residents,” Baker said. “All Manor residents received a bouquet for their room. We had several extra bouquets that were placed around the nursing home to help brighten up the dining room, nurse stations and other common areas.”

“The smiles that you see as a result of this little gesture is definitely the best part. The residents are just thrilled when they get this unexpected delivery,” Baker said, adding that she not only enjoys the smiles evoked during deliveries but also during creation of the bouquets. “There are truly smiles all the way around — the kids can’t stop smiling because they are proud of what they created. The expression on their faces speak volumes about the gift everyone receives when bringing joy to others.”
