Like much in 2020, event will look different but tradition carries on
Despite the many challenges that accompany planning for public events this year as a result of coronavirus concerns, coordinators for the much-loved Foothills Classic say the show will go on — it will simply look a little different in 2020.
“We are trying to be as safe as possible to give everyone a chance to enjoy the show,” stated Dana Fagerhaug, one of the longtime organizers for the Foothills Classic. “We normally give out mugs and have a hefty crew of helpers manning the show. This year, we are running with a lighter staff and giving out t-shirts to participants instead.”
Another change this year will be a shift to a “show and shine,” which will avoid judging all together.
“This year, it’s all for the fun of it, not stiff competition,” Fagerhaug said. “ We won’t line the entries up in classes. We’re asking participants to park as they come in north of the high school.”
Fagerhaug said that the high school will be open for bathroom use and portable toilets will be situated around the show for attendee convenience.
Call for local entries
Fagerhaug said that he and other event organizers hope that locals will come out in full force, pointing to the treasure trove of Jerauld County vehicles that emerged earlier in the year during Cruisin’ on Main events that brought people together separately and safely as they followed a route around town and honked and waved to passersby.
“During the ‘Cruisin’ Main’ events earlier this year we saw so many locals bring their cars out of the garage,” Fagerhaug said. “We hope that we get a big local turnout for the show that will be immediately followed by a cruise around town at 4 p.m.”
For the first time in the event’s history, Foothills Classic is open to semis without trailers. Back again is the popular kids pedal pull, with registration starting at 12:30 p.m. and the pull kicking off at 1 p.m. Because of social distancing, no bleachers will be in place and attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs for seating.
Registration for the car/truck/tractor/motorcycle/semi show is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. the day of the event. No pre-registration will be accepted this year. The cost to participate is $15.
While there won’t be official judging of the show, a Fireman’s Choice, Mayor’s Choice, Sheriff’s Choice and Business/Organization Choice will be selected by local leaders with trophies going to those entrants selected.
“We know everyone is facing hardship right now and opted out of soliciting business sponsors this year. If any businesses are interested in helping with the event they can call me at 605- 350-1687,” Fagerhaug said. “We’re going easy this year until we get through this unprecedented time. We hope everyone comes out for an afternoon of community fun.”
