The Spartan Girls Basketball team had a busy week with three games.
On Tuesday, January 7 the Lady Spartans were defeated by Colome by a score of 47-22. This was a make up game from December 28. The Spartans had a hard time getting any shots to fall in the first half and trailed 16-4 at halftime. A couple times in the third quarter they were able to cut the score to 10, but just could not get any offense going. Avery Orth led the scoring with nine points and also pulled down five rebounds. Grace Gran added eight points and four rebounds. The JV team did defeat Colome JV by a score of 27-24. Madison Privett and Avery Orth each had eight points.
Wessington Springs Lady Spartans earned their second win of the season on Thursday with a 46-15 victory of Sunshine Bible Academy (SBA). The Spartans led 25-7 at halftime and kept it going in the second half. Grace Gran had 11 points and six rebounds while Piper Jones had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The JV team also defeated SBA by a score of 43-8. Avery Orth had 10 points and Alyssa Grohs and Marissa Dornbusch each had six points.
On Friday, the Wessington Springs Spartans girls basketball team traveled to Ethan to take on the highly rated Ethan Rustlers. The Lady Spartans hung tough in the first half and were within 10 points late in the second half. Ethan made a little run before half and led 33-12 at halftime. In the second half, the Spartans played tough defense but could not get any shots to drop and ended up losing 53-19. Avery Orth led the way with seven points and seven rebounds. The Spartan JV girls were also defeated by a score of 34-20. Avery Orth led the scoring with seven points and Riley Roduner had five points.
This coming Friday, January 17 the Spartans Girls basketball team will begin 281 Conference Tournament play with a first round game vs Hitchcock-Tulare at Wolsey at 8 p.m.
BY BOYS BASKETBALL HEAD COACH JOEY MITCHELL
The Spartan Boys Basketball team won big against Colome Tuesday at home,shooting almost 60% from the field and defensively only allowed 22 points. The game was led by Jacob Messmer with 14 points, Tyler Kole with 13 points, and Mason Schleske with 11 pts and 10 rebounds.
Basketball action continued Thursday as we won a hard fought battle, overcoming adversity at home against a good Sunshine Bible Academy team. Thurday’s victory was led by Messmer with 27 points and 19 rebounds. Schleske recorded 16 points and nine rebounds.
Friday, we had a tough battle at Ethan against a good team, losing 56-66. It was a good experience as different players stepped up and helped in a variety of different ways. The game was led by Schleske with 23 points and eight rebounds, Kole had 20 points, and Messmer has 12 rebounds.
This coming Saturday, January 18 the Spartans Boys Basketball team will begin 281 Conference Tournament play with a first round game vs Highmore-Harrold at Wolsey at 5:30 p.m.
