Telling “Our Story”

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). What began in Wessington Springs as Future Homemakers of America (FHA)  in 1948 has evolved over the years, affiliated until 1956 and re-affiliating in 1963.
FHA began as a national organization of pupils studying homemaking. The emphasis has changed to the family over the years and the organization has changed its name to FCCLA, developing into a premiere student leadership organization.

In order to highlight  the vibrant history of student leadership development, themed FCCLA stories will be shared with True Dakotan readers each month:

November – Service
December – Family
January – Health and Wellness
February – Celebrate the Impact of our Story
March – Career
April – Financial
May – Global Impact
The feature for October is Leadership, turn to PAGE TEN in this week’s print or e-issue for the story. Need a subscription? Visit
