On Thursday, September 6, 2018, Wessington Springs hosted the 281 Conference Cross-Country Meet at the Springs Golf Course. The course looked great and the weather was just what we ordered.
The girls’ varsity was the first race of the day. Madelynn Brantner, of James Valley Christian, was the girls’ champion, beating teammate Abby Hasart for the win by nearly 34 seconds. Maddie Knox, of Highmore-Harrold, AbbyKate Hamilton, of James Valley Christian, and Hannah Terkildsen, of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, completed the top five.
Next to step up to the starting line were AJ Neely and Isaac Kolousek for the Spartans and the rest of the boys’ varsity runners. Both boys ran well. Neely stayed with the lead pack and finished fifth behind a wall of strong runners from JVC. Kolousek finished 15th. Neely’s time was 18:48.97 and Kolousek’s time was 21:26.15 in the 5K race.
Exchange student, Antonio Menendez, ran in the JV race. He crossed the finish line in 20:05.78 to capture the 10th place ribbon.
Brock Krueger ran in the junior high race. The distance was a 2K and he had a strong kick at the finish, which we will try to start sooner. He came across the finish line in 3rd place with a time of 8:37.33.
The Spartans will look to keep hydrated this week as the weather forecast calls for temperatures to climb back into the 90s.
We travel to Oacoma’s golf course to participate in the cross-country meet hosted by Chamberlain High School on Thursday.
