Football team heads to playoffs

The Blackhawks rounded out their season with a big Homecoming  win against the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers last Friday night. A first-round playoff matchup will be held in Wessington Springs Friday, October 23 at 5 p.m. vs the Sisseton Redmen. Blackhawks Power into the Playoffs

The Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks finished up the regular season with a convincing Homecoming win over the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers on Senior Night. The non-conference game saw the Blackhawks score early and often en route to a 55-6 victory.

The Blackhawks found the end zone in their first seven drives to take a 47-0 lead heading into half. Clay Olinger took runs from 36, 35, and three yards for scores. Camden Jost had two scoring runs from two and nine yards out. Carter Grohs took a handoff from 24 yards out. Lane Olinger finished out the half scoring on a toss play from 11 yards out. Philip Hines was 1-5 on extra points, while Quentin Christensen caught a slant from Tryce Slykhuis for a two point conversion, and Hayden Beigh converted a two point conversion run.

The second half saw the JV take the field for the remainder of the game. Roncalli got on the board after an Austin Meyers run from five yards out in the third. The Blackhawks finished the scoring with a 29-yard run by Beigh in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Blake Larson converted the PAT to give the game its final score, 55-6.

The Blackhawks offense racked 528 total yards compared to 126 for the Cavaliers. W/WS/SC gained 470 yards on the ground averaging 11.8 yards per carry. Clay Olinger managed 172 yards on seven carries. Grohs had seven carries for 82 yards, and Jost had five carries for 66 yards. Blake Larson went 1-1 in the passing game with a 58 yard strike to Cade Mohling on the only recorded pass in the game for the Blackhawks.

Defensively, 26 Blackhawks recorded a  defensive statistic in the game. Luke Knipfer led with 4.5 tackles and one sack. Dylan Schimke recovered a fumble and Blake Larson had an interception.

The 7th seeded Blackhawks (6-2) will host a first round matchup in Wessington Springs vs the 10th seeded Sisseton Redmen (5-3).  Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Friday night. The winner of Thursday’s game will face-off with the winner of the Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan – Lead-Deadwood game.
