In game one of the South Dakota VFW 16U State tournament Wessington Springs played Canova. Canova scored first in the third inning on a Springs throwing error. Wessington Springs came back in the fifth inning and scored two runs to take the lead 2-1. Canova then scored in the top of the seventh to tie the game at two a-piece.
The game stayed tied until the ninth inning when Canova pushed another run across the plate. With Springs down one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Quinten Christensen led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 3.
In the top of the 10th, Canova was able to score five runs to take the lead 8-3. Springs was able to score two more runs in the bottom of the 10th, but it was not enough as Canova won the game 8-5. Mason Schelske was the starting pitcher for Wessington Springs and went six innings giving up two hits and striking out 14 batters. Clay Olinger and Cooper Hainy led Springs with two hits a piece.
