Due to COVID-19, in lieu of an in-person, traditional graduation ceremony, Wessington Springs High School (WSHS) Principal Jason Kolousek announced that WSHS graduates will be honored with a procession in the elementary school parking lot east of the gym on May 16 at 3 p.m.
“We ask cars to park east of the gym facing west towards the gym,” he said. “We will be using a sound system and a radio frequency with the channel sent out closer to the ceremony.”
At 3 p.m., school officials will begin announcing graduating seniors in alphabetic order. Seniors will each be driven in a vehicle, preferably in the back of a pick up, dressed in cap and gown. When their name is announced, their vehicle will proceed from north to south on the west side of the parking lot, just east of the gym. A table with their diplomas will be displayed and seniors will stop, get out of the vehicle and pick up their diploma.
Dr Pittman and a representative of the school board will be positioned a safe distance away for a photo with the graduate.
After all seniors are announced and receive their diplomas, the Wessington Springs Fire Department will lead them on a parade through town, with the exact route published closer to the event.
“We would still like to do a ceremony in the gym when restrictions are lifted and it is safe for everyone,” Kolousek said.
National Junior Honors Society induction will be held via Zoom on May 14 at 6 p.m. National Honors Society induction will be held via Zoom on May 14 at 7 p.m. Scholarships will be announced with diplomas on May 16 with academic and athletic awards announced on Venture channel 382 or on YouTube May 21.
