What began as a festive ride through downtown Wessington Springs turned into a meaningful act of community support this holiday season.
Wessington Springs resident Larry Powell used his Christmas train rides during the townwide Christmas kickoff on Dec. 1 to raise money for the Wessington Springs School District lunch program, benefiting students who may need extra help covering the cost of second servings.
While all students receive lunch regardless of their ability to pay, the program does not cover additional helpings. Powell saw an opportunity to help fill that gap by bringing his train to Main Street, offering rides to children and families, and inviting local individuals and businesses to sponsor the rides. All proceeds were donated directly to the school lunch program. More than $3,500 was raised through the effort. Powell recently presented the donation to Wessington Springs Elementary School Principal Becky Fjerstad.
Sponsors supporting the Christmastrainfundraiser included: Duane and Janet Deneke; Dale and Melissa Schimke; Phil and Sue Campos; Wilbur Ellis; Agtegra; Farm Bureau, Brian Bergeleen, Agent; American Bank and Trust; Amkota; Templeton Church; Seed Barn; Susan Olson; Chris and Sheila Christensen; J&M Specialties; F&M Bank; Knights of Columbus; Norma Powell; Michelle Hurley; Our Savior’s Lutheran Church; -81 Enterprises; Wessington SpringsMethodistChurch; Marianna Borkowski Family; Shelley Fuerst; Cindy Eilers; Lennis and Peg Fagerhaug; Shane and Julie Fastnacht; Deach and Bonnie Koch; Craig and Peggy Jensen; S&M Enterprise; Craig and Kasie Sealey; Tom and Kathy Dean; Wade and Sarah Klein; Brad and Heather Larson; Sweet Grass; Schimke Ranch; Rolling Hills Vet Clinic; Luckett Auction; and Springside Sales.
