Local bowlers celebrate milestone in Las Vegas

A trip to Las Vegas became an unforgettable milestone as four local women competed in the USBC Women’s Bowling Championships and celebrated decades of friendship on the lanes.

Gloria Vavra, Lila Hoffman, Kendra Brandenburg and Donna Wagner traveled to Las Vegas for the national tournament, with Verle Hoffman driving the group from Wessington Springs. Along the way, they made sightseeing stops at Canyonlands, Moab, Zion National Park and Valley of Fire.

The highlight of the trip came when Vavra and Hoffman were recognized for participating in their 25th Women’s Championships, each receiving a commemorative plaque honoring the milestone. Wagner completed her 24th tournament in Vegas and is slated to earn her own 25-year plaque next year when the tournament is held in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Highlights in Vegas were sightseeing on The Strip with a favorite stop being the Bellagio Botanical Gardens.

While tournament standings won’t be finalized for another week, the group said the trip was filled with laughter and memories made together over a quarter-century of bowling.
