In April of 1991, Alfred and Julia Bucher established the Alfred and Julia Bucher Educational Trust. The trust was designed to provide financial assistance in the form of a scholarship to youth from Hyde and Hand County to further their education. The first scholarships were awarded in the spring of 1999 for use during the 1999-2000 school terms. Each year the dollar amount and number of recipients varies based on available income.
Scholarship requirements include current high school seniors and students that have graduated from high school in 2020, 2021 and 2022; residents of Hand or Hyde counties who will be or are attending any institution of higher learning in South Dakota. Other factors considered are financial need; involvement in school and community activities, or strong work experience. Any Hyde or Hand county residents that are attending a Catholic seminary are also eligible for this scholarship.
