Feeding South Dakota delivered its first distribution of senior meal boxes to the Wessington Springs Senior Center on Tuesday, Nov. 18, marking a new location for the monthly program. The boxes were previously handed out at the 4-H Building and later at the home of longtime volunteer April Grubb. With Grubb’s retirement, Feeding South Dakota sought a new distribution site and local volunteers stepped in to help.
Through coordinated efforts among Feeding South Dakota, ROCS, the Wessington Springs Senior Center and community volunteers, the program has secured a permanent local pickup point. Fifteen boxes were distributed last month, with some recipients picking up their own and others designating volunteer proxies to collect and deliver on their behalf.
Residents who believe they may qualify for the senior food box program are encouraged to apply. Local volunteers Ann Scheel (605-520-2646) and Gloria Vavra (605680-1412) can assist with applications. Questions may also be directed to Jordan Schumacher, Feeding South Dakota Community Partnership Coordinator, at 605-3350364, ext. 154.
Feeding South Dakota delivers senior boxes to Wessington Springs on the third Tuesday of each month, with the next scheduled delivery on Dec. 16. Volunteers are currently distributing senior boxes only but hope the program may expand to serve additional community members in need.
