National Poppy Day will be observed Friday, May 22, 2026, as Americans across the country wear red poppies to honor fallen service members and support veterans, activeduty military personnel and their families.
The red poppy has been recognized as a symbol of sacrifice since World War I and serves as a reminder of those who served and died in defense of the nation.
Each year, members of the American Legion Auxiliary distribute poppies and accept donations to support veterans and military families facing medical and financial needs.
Locally, members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #14 will be accepting donations on Main Street in Wessington Springs during the morning hours on May 22.
