The City of Wessington Springs and Wessington Springs School District are republishing their combined Notice of Vacancy after the South Dakota Secretary of State's Office corrected filing dates on the 2026 municipal and school election calendar.
According to the Secretary of State's Division of Elections, an error on the original election calendar listed incorrect deadlines for candidate nominating petitions. While circulation of nominating petitions began July 3, the deadline to file completed petitions has been moved from Aug. 25 to Aug. 18.
Because the original notice published in May reflected the incorrect dates provided by the Secretary of State's Office, the city and school district are publishing the corrected notice again this week.
City offices up for election include the two-year terms of Mayor Ryan Knipfer and aldermen Scott Vaske (Ward 1), Layton Schimke (Ward 2) and Pat Fastnacht (Ward 3).
Also on the ballot are two three year terms on the Wessington Springs School Board, currently held by Kasie Sealey and Dustin Weber.
The complete corrected Notice of Vacancy, including filing requirements and deadlines, is published on PAGE SIX of this week's True Dakotan.
