Tower Work Aims to Strengthen Local Cell Service

A worker tops the AT&T cell tower on Lookout Hill west of Wessington Springs as crews completed upgrades last week. While AT&T users experienced temporary service disruptions, the improvements are expected to enhance coverage in the area. AT&T also provides FirstNet, a nationwide, dedicated communications network built specifically for first responders. Through FirstNet, law enforcement, fire and emergency personnel receive priority and preemptive access to the network during emergencies, meaning their devices can connect even when networks are congested. According to Jerauld County Sheriff Jason Weber, AT&T coordinated ahead of the work to bring a mobile FirstNet unit to town—stationed at the rodeo grounds— ensuring uninterrupted, reliable service for local responders throughout the outage.
