The Wessington Springs FFA team earned second place in the South Dakota Farmers Union Farm Safety Quiz Bowl Championship Sept. 5 during the South Dakota State Fair.
Representing Wessington Springs were Ella Fagerhaug, Remie Roduner, Lily Roesler and Wyatt Arhart.
Wessington Springs was one of four teams to qualify for the championship during the State FFA Convention this spring, joining Faulkton Area, Hitchcock-Tulare and Tri-Valley. Faulkton Area captured the championship title.
The competition is designed to encourage students to learn about farm and ranch safety and apply that knowledge when working around livestock, machinery and other agricultural hazards.
For Roesler, those lessons have been particularly relevant this year. She spends considerable time on her grandparents’ farm and said a recent accident has brought farm safety closer to home.
“My grandpa was recently in a farm accident, so we have been talking about farm safety more than typical this summer,” Roesler said.
