A telltale sign of a change of seasons is the sound of the Wessington Springs marching band rehearsing along the streets of Springs adjacent to the high school.
With homecoming around the corner next week, the marching band is preparing not only for the parade but also for upcoming contests.
Band director at Wessington Springs High School, Renee Munsen weighed in on what the student musicians are preparing for.
“We will be competing in Arlington in parade competition on Thursday, September 28. Then we will be traveling to Platte for street competition on Friday, September 29. Both of those parades begin at 10:30 a.m.,” she said. “Then we have a break and our next competition will be at Sioux Valley in Volga on October 13. In Volga, it will be just street competition, which also begins at 10:30 a.m.”
In the short term, the community can look forward to the marching band performing their glow stick routine at the homecoming coronation on Tuesday, September 19 at 7 p.m., with another opportunity to see the marching band in action at the homecoming parade Friday, September 22 at 2 p.m.
When asked how practices are shaping up, Munsen is optimistic about this year’s marching band.
“They picked up on the routine very quickly, and now we are just trying to fine tune our routine,” she explained. “So far I am very impressed with these band students.”
