On President’s Day 2024, the Wessington Springs Elementary School gymnasium and newly constructed Rec Center were transformed into a shopping and educational mecca for Farm, Home and Health Show attendees thanks to recent Wessington Springs High School (WSHS) graduate, Avery Orth. She took on the revitalization of the Farm and Home show after a three year hiatus of the event.

Orth recently donated the proceeds from the Farm, Home and Health Show to members of the Build Springs Board, Julie Bruckner, Roger Hainy, and Hilary Grohs during a check presentation on Monday, May 20.

“A huge thank you to Avery! We are very grateful for the amount of hours she put in to successfully pull off such a large event and decide to donate the proceeds to Build Springs,” said Hainy.

The $1,449 donation will be used to buy seating for the commons area near the Rec Center entryway and concession stand, plus some community serving items for the kitchen. The Rec Center has been widely used for community events and gatherings of late, partially due to the recent closing of the American Legion.

“Community use was one of the Build Springs visions for the Rec Center,” said Bruckner. “This donation will help make the space even more attractive for community events.”

While community use is on the rise and welcomed, board members point out that the facility is also enjoyed by students of all ages for practices and training.

“In addition to lots of recent community use, coaches and student athletes lean toward the Rec Center gym as their favorite for practice. There are less distractions and traffic which allows for better focus,” said Grohs.
