Residents interested in running for public office in the upcoming election cycle should be aware of upcoming filing deadlines for nominating petitions.
Candidates seeking placement on the primary election ballot must file nominating petitions by 5 p.m. March 31, 2026. Petitions sent by registered mail and postmarked by that deadline will be accepted.
Those planning to run as independent candidates in the general election must file petitions by 5 p.m. April 28, 2026, with registered mail accepted if postmarked by the deadline.
Nominating petitions for Jerauld County offices, including sheriff, auditor, register of deeds and county commission seats, must be filed with the Jerauld County Auditor during regular business hours.
Petitions for state and federal offices, including U.S. senator, U.S. representative, governor and legislative seats, must be filed with the South Dakota Secretary of State at the State Capitol in Pierre. More information can be found in the public notice on PAGE FOUR
