American Legion Abernathy Post 16 of Gann Valley was recently awarded a $1000 Operation Round-Up grant from Central Electric Cooperative to help purchase American Legion grave markers for Spring Hill Cemetery.
Operation Round-Up is a voluntary program in which Central Electric members round up their monthly statement to the next whole dollar, and the extra cents accumulate to support local projects.
"Legion grave markers make it easier to identify U.S. Military Veterans' graves and give them the proper respect," Abernathy Post 16 member Ken Wulff explained in the grant application.
Carol Grabin, who helped with the project, said, "We were able to purchase 27 grave markers this year, but the work isn't done. St. Placidus Cemetery still needs grave markers."
Anybody interested in supporting the effort to purchase American Legion grave markers for local cemeteries can contact Ken Wulff at 605-293-3277.
Yvette Isburg of Fort Thompson serves on the Operation Round-Up board of trustees for Buffalo County. The next grant application deadline is November 1. For more information about the program, call 605-996-7516 or visit www.centralec.coop and click on member programs.
