The Love Your Neighbor Tour plans to stop in Wessington Springs as they circle the state September 20-24 sharing a nonpartisan, inter-faith message in support of Medicaid expansion for South Dakota which voters have an opportunity to approve in November at the ballot box.

The public is invited to meet the tour Saturday, September 24, 9 - 10 a.m. at the Springs Inn, 201 Main St. East.

The message of the tour is that all religions have a call to love our neighbors, especially neighbors in need. Loving and serving our neighbors means we care for people around us whose health is at stake.

Speakers on the tour will share stories of how Medicaid expansion can be an effective response to the sick and suffering while very economical for the state. The majority of our South Dakota neighbors who need this are low-wage workers whose jobs lack health benefits. This tour shares voter registration information and encourages all to vote ‘Yes’ for Medicaid expansion, Amendment D on the statewide ballot this fall.

Tour wrangler Brenda Handel-Johnson, ELCA Minister of Word and Service explains, “Many South Dakotans are not going to the doctor because they do not have access to healthcare coverage.”

Thirty-eight states have adopted Medicaid expansion. They are finding both health and economic benefits at little or no cost to state governments. We believe South Dakotans want these improved health outcomes, support to rural hospitals and to low-wage workers, including farmers and caretakers, and the economic benefit to our state.
