NEW DATE: Winter Wine Tasting Arrives at Field House in Wessington Springs City Park Sunday

Wine tasting event moved to Sunday for more favorable weather

A conversation with her son halfway around the world sparked an idea for Wessington Springs woman Gwyneth Fastnacht that is materializing in the form of a “Winter Wine Tasting” at the Field House in City Park this Sunday, January 21 from 4-6 p.m.

“I was talking to John, and he and a couple of buddies spent New Year’s Eve and a couple of weeks skiing around Europe,” said Fastnacht. “They started in Vienna and one of their first nights, they went to an outdoor city square to enjoy mulled wine and go ice skating. I said, ‘Why can’t we do something fun like that for the grown ups, toward the evening?’”

Fastnacht talked to Laura Baker, owner of Baker’s Design — flower and giftware shop and seller of South Dakota wines.

“I thought, what a cool idea. This could be a fun winter event after Christmas, before we get busy in the spring. How fun to do a wine tasting in the park at the Field House,” Baker explained.

Originally scheduled for Saturday, organizers moved the event to Sunday for more favorable weather.

Fastnacht, organizer of the wildly popular Winter Park Activities that many winter weekends includes sledding, wagon rides, ice skating, hot cocoa and free ice skate rentals said that it would be fun to take a more grown up angle for the evening while also raising funds for the non-profit organization that brings winter magic to families from across the region.

Tickets for the event are $25 with $5 of all admission purchased going toward Winter Park Activities.

Baker said that the $25 admission includes tasting a variety of sweet, semi sweet and dry table wines. The event will also feature a new, specialty wine from With the Winds Winery.

“Admission gets you five samples, along with oyster crackers, meat and cheese to cleanse your pallet,” she said. “We will have the option to also buy a whole glass of the wine you like to enjoy at the event and bottles will be for sale to take home.”

The first 24 attendees will receive an etched, Wessington Springs wine glass. To purchase a ticket in advance, call Baker’s at 605-539-9800.
