True Dakotan Brings Home Four Editorial Awards

The South Dakota NewMedia Association announced the winners for entries in its annual contest that recognizes overall quality work in news, editorial, advertising, design, digital and social media. This year, the True Dakotan was recognized for its work in the following categories, with notations from judges (italicized) made up of members of the Wyoming Press Association:

• Best Feature Photo, 2nd place: Not A Chance Of Dampened Spirits At Foothills Days 2023. “The reflection of the kids in the puddle, coupled with the genuine smiles on the faces, make this entry stand out.”

• Best Local Government Story, 3rd place: WS City Council to Initiate Independent Audit on Electric and Water Meters

• Best Photo Series, 3rd place: Back-to-Back SoDak 16 Appearances Ignite Fierce Spirit for the Spartans.

“Love the photos. Definitely tells the story of the spirit that abounds for their Spartans.”

• Best Special Publication, 2nd place: Jerauld County Outdoors 2023. “Very nice mix of stories to read around the campfire or in the blind and information that hunters really need.”

Outstanding Young Journalists for 2023

A journalist for one of the largest weekly newspapers in the state and a reporter for a statewide non-profit news organization were named Outstanding Young Journalists for 2023 by SDNA.

Emelia Enquist, a journalist for the Grant County Review at Milbank, and Makenzie Huber, a reporter for South Dakota Searchlight, received the recognition during SDNA’s Better News Media Contest awards announcement on Friday, April 26, as part of the 141st SDNA convention. Journalists under the age of 30 are eligible for the Outstanding Young Journalist Award.
