Area schools, organizations and individuals demonstrated outpouring of support
Hundreds of people filtered through the Wessington Springs Elementary cafeteria for a fundraising event for the Carothers family last Tuesday. Twelve-year-old Reba Carothers died Monday, February 5, days after she was struck by a car while trying to board a school bus on Jan. 26. The fundraiser, which involved a dinner, a silent auction and a 50-50 raffle, began before the Wessington Springs, Wolsey-Wessington varsity basketball game that took place in the adjacent gym. In an email sent to the school community by Wessington Springs Elementary School Principal Becky Fjerstad, she announced that the local fundraising efforts for the Reba Carothers family raised just over $30,000 with more donations still coming in.
