In an effort to recognize and thank local veterans for their service to our country and protecting the freedoms enjoyed by Americans every day, the community came together last week to organize several Veterans Day tributes. A school salute honored local service men and women on Veterans Day with a program held at Wessington Springs Elementary School Friday, featuring the sixth grade class sharing the meaning behind the 13 Folds of Glory. The high school choir sang “God Bless the USA” with a powerful solo delivered by Carter Gaikowski.
The middle school/high school band performed “Armed Forces on Parade,” a stirring medley of marches from the United States armed forces.
Veterans were asked to stand and given roses by high school students including Caroline Witte and Hannah Heezen
Gary Orth, a Vietnam Veteran who recently experienced Washington D.C. as part of the Midwest Honor Flight, shared details about his recent trip.
