On Saturday, February 25, the Lady Spartans, seeded 2nd in region 5B (15-6), take on the Gregory Gorillas, seeded 3rd in region 5B (11-10), in the 3rd round of region play at 2:30 p.m. in the Corn Palace. The winner of this game will advance to the “SoDak 16” game scheduled to be played on March 2. The Lady Spartans will be pushing to extend their 8-0 game winning streak with a win on Saturday.
“It’s been over 15 years since we’ve advanced this far in post season play,” said Spartan Girls Basketball Head Coach Jason Kolousek. “Even though we had a blizzard disrupt this week’s schedules, I think everything worked out fine — we were able to get the game played and won on Tuesday at home. A couple days of rest will serve the girls well. We’ll have a good practice tonight to prepare for the game.”
Kolousek looks to tomorrow’s game against Gregory as a good matchup.
“Gregory is pretty athletic, we match up pretty well with them. There are some places they will have a hard time matching up with us,” Kolousek explained. “We are going to focus on stopping their strengths and using our advantages we have over them.”
Kolousek also added that the Lady Spartans will “continue to focus on the little things” — the fundamentals where they’ve had success such as boxing out, rebounding and making good passes.
“I’m excited for the girls, they’ve worked hard to get to this point. It’s a lot of fun to be a part of.”
The Spartan Boys play their last regular season game later today, Friday, February 24, against rival Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (SCW). The game is scheduled to take place at Forestburg with Junior High starting at 4 p.m., “C” team playing at 5 p.m., “JV” at 6:15 p.m., and Varsity playing at 7:45 p.m. With a win tonight against SCW, seeded 8th in region 5A (6-13), the Spartans, tied for 3rd seed in region 5B ( 13-6), will continue their 6-0 game winning streak and hopefully secure the 3rd seed position going into post-season region play. Because they they are seeded in the top four, the boys will host a regional match up at home on Tuesday, February 28 at 7 p.m.
