WS Elementary students to help create mural with artist Mary Wipf

The walls of Wessington Springs Elementary will soon become a canvas for creativity as students work alongside renowned South Dakota artist Mary Wipf to design and paint a new mural in the school’s elementary building.

Wipf will be in residency Oct. 27 through Nov. 7, guiding students through every step of the process, from sketching ideas to adding the finishing brushstrokes. Each classroom will contribute images that Wipf will weave together into a cohesive mural celebrating the school community.

A teaching artist for more than four decades, Wipf was honored with the 2024 South Dakota Governor’s Award for Outstanding Service in Arts Education. Over her 42-year career, she has completed nearly 1,000 artist residencies across the state, bringing hands-on art experiences to students and adults of all ages and abilities.

Wipf’s residencies have taken her to schools, libraries, hospitals, and community centers throughout South Dakota, introducing participants to drawing, painting, printmaking, and traditional marbling techniques. Her work emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and confidence-building through art.

The Wessington Springs residency is made possible through the support of SACOTA, the Springs Area Community Club (SACC), the Wessington Springs Area Community Foundation, and the South Dakota Arts Council.
