Students from Three-School Football Co-Op Vote on New Mascot
Last fall, school board representatives and administration from Woonsocket, Wessington Springs and Sanborn Central (WWSSC) School Districts made the decision to rebrand the football co-op by choosing a new mascot.
The idea behind this decision was to establish the co-op’s own unique identity instead of having the same mascot as the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks. This was also the most efficient time to rebrand, as 2025 marks the five-year rotation for new uniforms.
Each of the three schools from the WWSSC football co-op were given an opportunity to come up with an idea for a new mascot. Each school chose a mascot, with all three mascots voted on by 7-12 graders from each school.
The results are as follows: 167 votes for Bucks, 56 votes for Stallions and 21 votes for Bandits.
“The Bucks were the top vote at all three schools,” said Wessington Springs Middle School/High School Principal and Athletic Director Jason Kolousek at Monday’s school board meeting.
The Bucks also received the most votes from each school. The WWSSC Bucks will be the official mascot of the WWSSC co-op using the same colors — red, blue and black — that represented the co-op in the past.
“The co-op has been a huge positive for all schools and for our football program as a whole,” Kolousek shared. “We look forward to many more years as a co-op — now moving forward with a new name.”
