LETTERBOX: In Praise of Truth, Integrity, and Local News

Dear Kristi,

WOW, the Christmas edition of the True Dakotan didn’t disappoint! In fact, it went far beyond my expectations, and I wanted to thank you for all you do to provide a weekly newspaper in such a challenging time. I’ve shared with you in person the struggle I have with social media, and although I do try to use it myself to help save advertising dollars, one post in what, 50 probably or more an hour, can’t possibly reach the number of people one edition of a good local newspaper can… if, and I do mean IF… people subscribe to said paper and actually read it! Hub and I talk about articles that we read as we sit in our easy chairs and watch TV. We discuss the news, the weather, the events advertised. I wonder how many people actually discuss around the dinner table with their children what is in the newspaper these days? I worry that we see a “post” and take it for truth without ever doing research to be absolutely sure. In my experience, our news medias have always sought truth based on facts that get researched extensively. I am so concerned about where some of our information is coming from these days, but feel you still have a great deal of integrity and I for one am very appreciative of that!

Keep up the good work and remember… your readers are willing to help if you desire more content and photos, so you don’t have to burn the candle at both ends all the time. By the way, your young interns are a great asset to your team too! It’s always neat to see them grow.

Sincerely,

Laura G. Kieser
