LETTERBOX: A Community Effort to Support a Deployed Parent

Dear Editor,

At Wessington Springs Elementary School, we believe one of the most important lessons we can teach our students is how to show kindness, gratitude, and support for others. With that in mind, our school is hosting a January Supply Drive to support one of our own school families.

A parent in our community, Jake Richardson, is currently deployed overseas on active duty. Throughout the month of January, our students, families, and staff are coming together to collect items that will be sent to Jake as a way to let him know he is appreciated and remembered back home.

Participation in the drive is completely optional, but any donation is greatly appreciated. A collection table has been set up in the elementary school cafeteria. Jake shared a list of items that would be especially helpful and appreciated, including snacks, coffee, personal care items, and a few fun treats from home. (Please note that jerky cannot be sent due to restrictions at his location.)

The collection deadline is January 23. After the drive concludes, the donated supplies will be packaged and mailed to Jake and others serving with him. In addition to the supplies, our students and teachers will include handwritten notes and colored pages to share messages of encouragement and thanks.

We are grateful for the continued support of our school families and community, and for the opportunity to come together in support of those who serve our country. Thank you for helping us show what community truly means.

Sincerely,

Becky Fjerstad,
Principal Wessington Springs Elementary School
