Century Farm, Ranch Families Invited to Apply for State Recognition

PIERRE — South Dakota families with long-standing ties to the land are invited to apply for recognition through the South Dakota Century Farm and Ranch program.

The program, administered by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the South Dakota Farm Bureau, honors families who have owned and operated the same farmland or ranchland for 100 years or more.

To qualify, applicants must have maintained continuous ownership of at least 80 acres of the original farmland for a century. Families whose operations have remained in the family for 125 years may apply for Quasquicentennial recognition, while those reaching 150 years may apply for Sesquicentennial recognition. Applications must include documentation of the original date of purchase. Application forms are available online or by calling the South Dakota Farm Bureau at 605-353 8050. The deadline to apply is Aug. 1. Recognized families will be honored during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Sept. 3 on the South Dakota Farm Bureau Dakotaland Stage during the South Dakota State Fair in Huron. The 2026 fair runs Sept. 2–7.
