The WWSSC Bucks opened the 2026 football season with a 26-0 loss to Wagner, but head coach Michael Schmitz said the opener showed glimpses of what an experienced Bucks squad can accomplish this fall.
“The outcome was not what we were looking for, but we did see some moments of what this team could be,” Schmitz said. “We had some really good moments in all phases of the game that show the talent that we have.”
Grason Finn completed eight passes for 61 yards. Carson Finn caught three passes for 31 yards, while Teagen Eggleston added three receptions for 23 yards.
Defensively,CarsonFinn recorded nine solo and 10 assisted tackles along with a pass deflection. Nathan Gaikowski finished with six solo and five assisted tackles.
Schmitz said the Bucks return a number of players with varsity experience and have shown growth and improved team chemistry through preseason practices. He expects the team’s seniors to play an important leadership role as the season progresses.
The Bucks have a bye this week, giving the team additional time to return to fundamentals and prepare for the next test.
“We’ll get back to the basics and work to get better each and every week,” Schmitz said.
