No 2025 Election for BOE, Alpena or Lane Town Boards
Last Friday marked the deadline to submit nominating petitions for board vacancies on the Wessington Springs School District Board of Education, Towns of Alpena and Lane, as well as the City of Wessington Springs.
On the school board side, the three-year terms of Sara Thompson, Darrick Van Dyke and Derek Zastrow were set to expire, as well as the one year term for Todd Grohs’ remaining term that Scott Kolousek is currently filling. AJ Karsky, Jeff Messmer and Derek Zastrow filed petitions for the three-year positions and were unopposed. No petitions were received for the one year term.
In Alpena, the three-year term of Tara Viktora was set to expire. Viktora filed a petition and was unopposed.
In Lane, the three-year term held by Shirley Hines was set to become vacant. Hines filed a petition and was unopposed.
In Wessington Springs, the followingtermsweresettoexpire:the two-year terms of Kari Fagerhaug (Ward 1), Vickie Harmdierks (Ward 2) and Eva Voorhees (Ward 3), as well as the one-year term of Layton Schimke (Ward 2). The city will have three races: Layton Schimke and Beth Magistro are running for the one-year term in Ward 2. Jonathan Joste and Cherie Maxwell will run for the two-year position in Ward 2. Shawn Tobin, Kim Christensen and Eva Voorhees are running for the two-year position in Ward 3. In Ward 1, Kari Fagerhaug filed a petition and was unopposed.
The city election will be held on April 8, 2025 at the Jerauld County Ag Building. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Voter registration for the City of Wessington Springs Municipal Election will close on March 24, 2025 at 5 p.m. Failure to register by this date will cause forfeiture of voting rights for this election.

Approximately 200 voting SDGOP members came together to elect new State Republican officers for a two-year term.
Jim Eschenbaum of Miller in Hand County, was elected as Chairman, Janet Jensen of Rapid City in Pennington County was elected as Vice Chairman, Statla Russell of Hot Springs in Fall River County was elected as Secretary, and Tina Mulally of Rapid City in Pennington County was elected as Treasurer.
Regional Directors were also elected: Region 1 - Tom Pischke, Region 2 - Ben Krohmer, Region 3 - Doug Post, Region 4 - Rich Hilgeman, Region 5 - Tom Bruner and Region 6 - Ezra Hays.
The South Dakota Republican Party’s summer meeting is planned for July.
The next Jerauld County GOP meeting will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. at the Springs Inn.
