Spartans Shine at Ethan/Parkston Early Bird

Kenzie Kolousek Breaks 400m Dash School Record

On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, the Spartans traveled to Parkston to participate in the Ethan/Parkston Early Bird track meet. This was the first outdoor meet of the season for most of the Class A and B teams participating. The wind was moving along as fast as the kids, and it made for some competition in the events.

Throwers were given four throws and no finals. Entering the throwing rings for the Spartans were Anna Arhart and Makynna Heim. Arhart landed in 3rd place with her toss of 32’1 in shot put and she tossed the discus 75’6”. Makynna threw 22’ 7” in shot and 38’ 1” in discus. Lily Roesler threw the javelin 69’ 10”. For the boys we had Robbie Hine throw 111’3” in discus, Grady Gran threw 91’ 7”, and Wyatt Arhart threw 59’ 6”. Then in shot put Grady threw 36’ 4”, Robbie threw 34’ 8.5” and Wyatt landed 27’ 5” for the Spartans.

As field events started at 2pm, they also ran the 2-mile run. Alexis Roesler ran 14:58.46 to cross the line in 4th place. For the boys we had Sutten Jensen and Ranick Fjerstad at the starting line. Jensen was 4th in 12:15.60 and Fjerstad was 5th in 12:38.12. Then running took a break until 4pm to allow for most of the field events to be completed.

Due to the wind, at the coaches’ meeting they voted on running the 100m dash and hurdles backwards. The majority of coaches voted in favor of this, but the crew doing the automatic timing didn’t have two systems to put one at each end. So, it was decided that the 100 dashes and hurdle races would be run at the end of the meet, so they wouldn’t have to move their equipment twice.

The 800m relay of Bailey Yost, Logan Mohling, Mariah Messmer, and Kenzie Kolousek ran 1:58.79 to cross the line in 2nd place. The boys 800m relay of Hayes Havlik, Colby Flowers, Nathan Gaikowski, and Will Grohs ran 1:41.58 to cross the line 4th place. Running the mile run for the Spartans was Ella Kolousek, 6:48.59; Alexis Roesler ran 7:10.49; and Masynn Mebius ran 7:20.27. Kohen Mebius ran his mile in 6:01.16. We entered two girls’ relays in the 400m relay. Lily Roesler, Roslyn Klein, and Aunnika Heumiller ran 1:03.05. Selah Havlik, Celia Garcia, Brooke Mohling, and Ashlyn Weber ran 1:05.65. The boy’s relay of Hayes Havlik, Wes Molnar, Nathan Gaikowski, and Will Grohs ran 48.35 for 4th place.

Logan Mohling returned to the track to compete in an open event after suffering a seasonending injury and not being able to compete at all last season. She ran an awesome race, and it is good to have her healthy enough to compete again. Logan clocked a 1:08.63 to snag the 6th place medal. Kenzie Kolousek stepped to the line in the 400m dash against all other runners from Ethan/Parkston in the heat. Kenzie moved well off the line and through the first 100m had already gained on girls in the lanes outside of her. Then by the 200m mark, she had overtaken a group of three runners. Kenzie didn’t let off the accelerator as she raced down the homestretch! Kenzie Kolousek crossed the line in 1:00.19 to not only win her heat, but the race, AND is the new school record holder in the 400m dash, beating the old time of 1:01.12. What a birthday she had!!

Bailey Yost ran 56.94, Selah Havlik ran 1:04.79, and Colby Flowers ran 48.38 for 4th place in the 300-hurdle race. The medley relay of Kenzie Kolousek, Mariah Messmer, Ashlyn Weber, and Ella Kolousek ran 5:17.33 for 3rd place. The boys followed, going 4:11.60 for 2nd place with Hayes Havlik, Will Grohs, Ranick Fjerstad, and Carson Finn passing the baton around.

Masynn Mebius was 5th place in the 800m run with her time of 3:22.77. Sutten Jensen ran his 800 in 2:42.08. We entered seven runners in the 200m dash. Ashlyn Weber ran the fastest of the Spartans in 33.33; Brooke Mohling, 33.78; Aunnika Heumiller, 35.19; Lily Roesler, 36.37; Celia Garcia, 36.88, and Roslyn Klein ran 38.28. The Spartans had five boys in the 200m dash with Nathan Gaikowski being the fastest of our five in 25.91, just one place away from medaling. Hayes Havlik was 26.66; Wesley Molnar, 27.50; Kohen Mebius, 31.35; and Grason Finn, 31.51.

The girls’ mile relay of Bailey Yost, Logan Mohling, Mariah Messmer, and Kenzie Kolousek clocked 4:38.43 for 5th place. The boys’ relay ran 3:52.50 with Carson Finn, Nathan Gaikowski, Will Grohs, and Karter Mebius finishing in 4th place.

We entered Anna Arhart, Robbie Hine, Makynna Heim, and Grady Gran into the Weightman’s 4x100 relays.

Finally, we had four girls compete in the 100m hurdles. Senior, Bailey Yost provides great leadership to the 7/8th grade girls who are eager to dedicate their time to the event. Bailey led the Spartans across the line with her 19.32. Roslyn Klein finished 24.67; Aunnika Heumiller ran 25.18; and Roesler finished in 25.51. Senior, Ashlyn Weber ran 15.88 in the 100m dash.
