From Flipping Pancakes to Fighting Fire, WS Volunteer Fire Dept. Answers the Call

Community Pancake Feed Carries On Despite Firemen Being Dispatched Mid-Event

In an instant, local firemen went from serving breakfast at their annual Wessington Springs Volunteer Fire Department (WSVFD) “Pancakes with the Easter Bunny” event to gearing up after being dispatched to a grass fire northwest of Springs. Pictured at top left are Eric Schroeder, Jim Vavra, Aaron Cashman, Jarrod Bultsma and Bailey Willman.

Several firemen, including Mike Mebius (pictured top. center) along with members of the WSVFD Auxiliary stepped in to continue serving breakfast to the hundreds of people in attendance at the fire hall Saturday morning, April 19, 2025.

Seemingly unfazed by the ruckus of fire trucks leaving the fire hall, Hallie Anson, pictured at top right, poses for her first-ever photo with the Easter Bunny.

In the lower left photo, Westin, Shelby and Brixley Schooler enjoy a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny at the Wessington Springs Fire Hall.

Pictured in the second photo from left, Ken Cudmore guides Jim Vavra out of the bay in the fire hall as firemen respond to Saturday’s fire. Despite a burn ban currently in place in the county, a controlled burn was the cause of the fire.

In the third photo, Firemen Mike Mebius and Scott Vaske stayed back to continue serving event attendees. WSVFD Auxiliary members Jacki Bultsma, Chelsea Cashman and Becky Krueger were among those who stepped up to help as firemen were dispatched to the fire.

At far right, following the event at the fire hall, the Easter Bunny headed to the Manor in a UTV to visit residents and staff.
