Lady Spartans clinch second seed in Region 5B

On Thursday, February 9, the girls traveled to Warner to take on a Warner team that was 13-5 entering the game. The first quarter saw the Spartans get out to a good start and took a 17-12 lead after one quarter of play. The 2nd quarter went back and forth until the last couple minutes of the quarter when the Spartans went on a run and were able to take a 29-18 lead into halftime. The Spartans had a strong start to the 3rd quarter and increased the lead to 39-20 early in the quarter. However, Warner was able to cut into that lead before end of the 3rd and the Spartans led 41-31 going into the final quarter of play. After some back and forth baskets the Spartans were able to pull away and came away with a 58-43 victory. Carissa Scheel had a big night for the Spartans with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Kirstie Munsen had 13 points. Avery Orth had 12 points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Grohs had six points, eight assists and eight rebounds. The Spartans also came away with the C game and JV game victories over Warner.

On Saturday, the Spartans hosted Hitchcock-Tulare in a makeup game from December. The JV girls started the day with a big victory. In the varsity girls game the first quarter saw back and forth scoring with the Spartans leading 18-14 after one quarter of play. The Spartans defense got locked in during the 2nd quarter holding Hitchcock-Tulare to 3 points and took a 29-17 lead into halftime. In the 3rd quarter the Spartans outscored HT 20-13 and held a 49-30 lead heading into the 4th. The Spartans built the lead up to 25 in the 4th before HT tacked on some late baskets to make the final score 62-46 in favor of the Spartans.

On Tuesday, February 14 the Spartans hosted Kimball/White Lake and were able to escape with a 41-37 victory. The Spartans got off to a slow start offensively and KWL took a 12-4 lead after one quarter of play. In the 2nd quarter the Spartans outscored KWL 13-8 and trailed 20-17 going into halftime. The Spartans again had a hard time scoring in the 3rd quarter, but the defense kept them in the game and the Spartans trailed 3125 going into the final quarter of play. However, the Spartans were able to dominate the 4th quarter outscoring KWL 16-6 and pulling out the 41-37 victory. Avery Orth had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Alyssa Grohs did not have a big night scoring, but had a huge impact on the game by grabbing six rebounds, dishing out five assists without committing any turnovers. Kirstie Munsen also pulled down nine rebounds.

For the final regular season game of the year for the Spartans girls they were able to defeat James Valley Christian at home on Friday night by a score of 54-43. Neither team could score for the first four minutes of the game, but the Spartans finally scored some baskets and led 11-4 after one quarter of play. Both teams struggled offensively in the 2nd quarter but the Spartans outscored JVC 9-7 and led 20-11 at halftime. The offense picked up in the 3rd quarter with each team scoring 16 points, and the Spartans maintained their nine point lead going into the final quarter of play. JVC was able to cut the lead to five points a couple of times in the 2nd half, but the Spartans maintained control of the game and came away with the 54-43 win to finish with a 14-6 record on the season. Avery Orth, Carissa Scheel, and Kate Havlik all had 15 points. Orth also pulled down 11 rebounds. Alyssa Grohs had five points, five rebounds and four assists. Kirstie Munsen had seven rebounds.

The Wessington Springs Spartans girls are the #2 seed in Region 5B. The Spartans began Region play on Tuesday, February 21 by hosting Tripp-Delmont/Armour. With a win in that game the Spartans advance to the next round of Region 5B play and would play the winner of Gregory/Marty in the Corn Palace in Mitchell on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. If Thursday’s gameshavetobepostponed because of weather then those games will be played on Saturday in the Corn Palace at 2:30 p.m.
