WHAT’S ON THE MENU?

BY PASTOR ZACH KINGERY

I was listening to a talk the other day and the speaker said something along the lines of “if you allow feelings to run your life your feelings will ruin your life.” It reminded me of how God reminds us in the Bible so many times to practice wisdom, to listen first before speaking, to be slow to speak and slow to anger.

It is a fairly solid concept, whether in athletics, academics, social life, spiritual life, etc.: Whatever is feeding you is leading you.

I mean, most of us learned this concept at a young age: you are what you eat.

Why have so many adults, especially those who claim the way of Jesus, forgotten this lesson?

If you aren’t in the word of God and you consume everything else then you will default to being led and controlled by the whims of your emotions and your emotions will be played with by the environment in which you immerse yourself. Who you are, and who Jesus has saved you to be, is so much more than your feelings or emotions.

This is why we need to be spiritually fed so we won’t be emotionally led. Codependency, manufactured rage, senseless division, these things are all the result of the choices we make each day. The news you watch, the shows you consume, the media you scroll through - it all has a profound and cumulative effect.

We need God’s wisdom and His guidance for our day. Jesus himself says that we cannot live on bread alone but on every word which comes from the mouth of God.

Today, don’t let your emotions lead you, let His word lead you. You will never waste your time by being in God’s presence.
