Last Sunday afternoon, the Wessington Springs Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a camper fire on SD Highway 34, three miles west of Wessington Springs.
Three engines, one tender, one brush truck, one rescue unit and 12 firefighters responded to the call.
“Thankfully there were no injuries but the camper which was being pulled, heading west on 34 was a total loss,” said WSVFD Fire Chief Jim Vavra. “The amount of material inside the camper, including several propane tanks made it a challenge to completely extinguish the flames. We had to approach it from the top and ended up having to enter the camper to fully put the fire out.”
The Jerauld County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the call and remained on scene.
