Investigation Underway as Cause of Fire Remains Undetermined
A structure fire that broke out last Tuesday morning north of Wessington Springs has destroyed the future home of the Rick and Becky Fjerstad family. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with authorities working to determine its origin.
According to Becky Fjerstad, who was at Wessington Springs Elementary School working in her role as principal when the fire broke out, the initial dispatch did not provide the exact location of the incident. However, she soon received the heartbreaking news that the house she and husband Rick had recently purchased was engulfed in flames.
The Fjerstads had big plans for their new property, which included moving in next month and making future additions.
“This winter, we purchased the house and acreage with hopes and dreams for the future,” said Fjerstad. “Although this is an incredibly sad and devastating event, we are grateful that no one was injured. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who has offered support, kind words, help, hugs, and prayers during this challenging time. Your kindness means the world to us.”
The Fjerstads had intended to construct an addition to the house in the coming months and had recently ordered an HVAC system. The property had significant potential, as the previous owners had made considerable improvements.
In November of last year, the Fjerstads approached the previous owner with a proposal to purchase the property. After careful consideration, the owner agreed, and the Fjerstad family took ownership on March 14, 2023.
“While this event has been devastating, I have a strong faith and believe that everything happens for a reason,” Fjerstad remarked. “I trust that the Lord has plans for us and will guide us towards a hopeful future. We will pick ourselves up, formulate a Plan B for our family and the acreage, and move forward. I am grateful that no one was harmed, and while things can be rebuilt, our sense of community and support cannot be replaced. Thank you to everyone who has extended their thoughts, help, support, and prayers during this challenging time.”
Currently, the Fjerstads are awaiting further evaluation by their insurance company before taking action. As they navigate through this difficult period, the family remains hopeful for the future and appreciates the outpouring of support from the community. A message of thanks from the Fjerstad family is published in this week's print and e-edition on PAGE FIVE
