A supper and silent auction event aimed at raising funds for the Blue Bag Nutrition Program is slated to be held during the Tuesday, December 19 double header home basketball game. Spearheaded by the Blue Bag Program Committee and Wessington Springs High School FCCLA Chapters, the event’s goal is to raise needed funds for the program that addresses food insecurity needs of children when school isn’t in session.
While Wessington Springs School District provides free or reduced meals to children at risk of hunger during the school week, the Springs Blue Bag Nutrition Program fills an important void with its backpack program. This program provides children with nutritious, easy-to- prepare foods once school lets out before weekends. The program currently hands out about 30 bags every Friday containing two breakfasts, three entrees, three fruits and a few snacks. The cost per student, per semester is approximately $180.
Bidding on silent auction baskets begins at 4:30 p.m. and ends at the beginning of the third quarter of the varsity boys basketball game. Christmas cookies and other baked goods will be on sale starting at 5 p.m., with supper also served beginning at 5 p.m. During the game, event organizers will offer opportunities for attendees to play “Chucka- Duck as well.
