Spartans Girls Off to a Promising Start This Season

The Wessington Springs Spartans girls kicked off the 202324 season with a 46-26 victory over Wolsey-Wessington at home last Tuesday. The Spartans got off to a good start by leading 14-9 after the first quarter of play. Avery Orth had it going from the start as she scored 12 points in the opening quarter. The Spartans increased their lead in the second quarter by outscoring Wolsey-Wessington by a score of 13-4 and took a 27-13 lead into halftime. In the third quarter the Spartans continued to build their lead and lead 37-17 going into the final quarter. The fourth quarter was played evenly with each team scoring nine points and getting the Spartans the 46-26 victory. Avery Orth led the way with 28 points and 18 rebounds. Alyssa Grohs, Kerstynn Heim, and Carissa Scheel each scored five points. Alyssa also had eight rebounds and dished out four assists.

On Thursday, December 7 the Spartans traveled to Faulkton for the second game of the year. This was a very hard fought game with both teams struggling to make shots. The score was tied at eight at the end of the first quarter. The first part of the second quarter was played evenly, but at end of the second quarter, Faulkton went on a little run and held a 25-15 lead at halftime. The Spartans however came out strong in the third quarter by outscoring Faulkton 15-9 in the quarter to only trail by four going into the fourth. However, in the fourth quarter, the Spartans struggled to score and could never quite catch up. The game ended with Faulkton winning by a score of 43-37. Avery Orth led scoring and rebounding with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kerstynn Heim scored 13 points for the Spartans.
