Five student athletes punch ticket to state golf tournament

Spartans are Region 2B boys team champs

The Spartans claimed the Region 2B boys team championship at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron last Friday, May 23, 2025, with a winning score of 237. Individually, JD Thompson came in second place, Luke Larson came in third, Heyns Bothma came in at 15th and Blake Miller qualified as part of the Spartans’ regional championship team. On the girls’ side, Taylor Braun qualified individually by securing 9th place at regions.

On the heels of last year’s state championship title, Wessington Springs Head Golf Coach Regina Teveldal said their extra time on the course has paid dividends.

“They all have put in extra time these past few weeks and rose up to the occasion at regions. We were beyond thrilled to take the Region 2B championship and to be qualifying, yet again as a team with two new teammates this year,” Teveldal shared. “Having our senior girl, Taylor make it was a huge highlight too. She has been ready for this.”

Leading up to state, Teveldal said that they will focus on making some tweaks but also holding true to the strategies and techniques that have brought so much success during the season.

“We will be working hard this week on where we’ve been struggling a bit and also stay focused on the things that we’ve worked on throughout the season. We will also be making some trips to Watertown this week to golf so the kids are familiar with the courses,” she explained. “We are looking forward to ending our season on a high note come next Monday and Tuesday.”
