Wessington Springs Elementary School will host Candy Hamilton as an Artist in the School September 23-27. Hamilton will be working with fifth and sixth graders writing and revising poems and fictional stories.
Hamilton, who lives in Rapid City, stresses using the five senses as a basis for stories and poems along with the elements of each writing form. She encourages students to have fun using their imaginations and creativity as well as understanding the importance of revising. Students will hear and read examples of stories and poems by a variety of writers as examples of fine writing.
Hamilton, a more than 20year veteran of the Artist in the School program, earned her Master of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota with a thesis of short stories, Family Circles. She has published news articles, poetry, short stories and essays in numerous newspapers, magazines, literary magazines and anthologies. She has won national awards for her journalism and poetry.
