I am writting about an article in the True Dakotan dated June 18, 2025. The Fiscal Affairs of Wessington Springs audit for year 2023 audited by Schoenfish & Co. out of Parkston SD. Response was Lack of Proper Segregation of Duties for Revenues. This comment has been printed since 2005. THAT’S 20 YEARS.
I looked up on Google the definition for Segregation of Duties not knowing what it was. The material weakness in internalcontrolswasnoteddue to lack of proper segregation of duties. Definition: For revenue involves dividing responsibilities within the revenue cycle to prevent any single person from controlling a transaction from start to finish. This helps to minimize the risk of errors and fraud. In essence, it ensures that no one person can authorize, record and handle cash related to a sale. Example of segregation: Sales order processing; one person takes the order, another approves credit and a third handles the sale. Cash handling credit and collections, recording transactions, etc. This is your home, this is your town, you do have a say.
