Jean Arlene Hainy, age 91, of Wessington Springs passed away on Wednesday, Sept 6. There was a funeral service on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 10:30 a.m. at the Foothills Bible church. A visitation was on Monday, Sept 11 at the church. Burial was at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Pastor Don Grubb officiating.
Jean was born on March 11, 1932 to Adolph and Celia Hainy at the family farm in Jerauld County. She attended Barber School for her first eight years. Her father passed away when she was young and she, her mother, and her brother Joseph worked the farm until Joseph married Gladys Fry in 1946. Jean and her mother moved into Wessington Springs and she attended High School there. After graduation, she attended a business college in Mitchell, South Dakota. She was hired by Berndt’s Electric in Huron so she and her mother moved to Huron, South Dakota. Jean was the Bookkeeper and Sales Clerk there for many years. She and her mother lived together and Jean took care of her as she aged. After her mother’s death and her retirement, Jean moved back to Wessington Springs where she has lived until her death.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Huron and then Wessington Springs. She raised a garden and belonged to a Garden Club in Huron. She was active in the Senior Center in both Huron and Wessington Springs, and worked at the Horticulture Building and Senior Center Building at the State Fair. She loved to read, do jigsaw puzzles, and help wherever she could. Traveling on bus tours made her an avid traveler, going all over the United States and Canada. She took meticulous notes about the places she saw and took many, many pictures to share, in fact she filled 22 picture albums. She told everyone she was only 4 foot 8 inches tall, which was true, but she was a spunky lady and she put on many miles with her short, quick steps.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Celia, her brother, Joseph, and her Sister-in- Law, Gladys. She is survived by her nephews, Roger (Pam), Keith (Kristi) Hainy, six great nieces and nephews, and 13 Great nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all the wonderful people at Avera Weskota Manor for all the tender care she received while residing there. She will be greatly missed.
