My Experience in Sports Writing

For the past few months, I have been covering local sports in our community. From football and volleyball to cross-country and, most recently, basketball, I have had the opportunity to report on the latest events happening week in and week out. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, I will be unable to continue writing weekly for the paper after this school semester.

I never realized how much I enjoyed writing until I sat down and began writing about events and topics that truly interest me. Being able to play a sport and then summarize it the following week gave me two unique perspectives — as both a reporter and a player. Some weeks were better than others, and writing after a loss was a little more difficult than writing after a win.

While writing for the paper, I can honestly say there wasn’t anything I disliked. It helped me step out of my comfort zone and reach out to interview people I had very little interaction with in the past. Kristi helped me tremendously and made the writing process easy. She was always there to give me ideas and offer help whenever I needed it. My teacher, Mrs. Jackson, also made it easy to balance writing for the paper while keeping up with schoolwork in class. Both of them not only helped me write these articles but also helped me grow as a writer during this time.

Looking ahead, sports writing and broadcasting are areas that truly interest me. This class gave me a new perspective on my interests, and when I make my college decision, this experience will definitely play a role. This has been a great experience over the past few months, and I will miss it next semester.

I am very grateful for the opportunity provided by Kristi and through Mrs. Jackson at the school. Thank you to everyone who reads my articles each week — I truly appreciate it!
