FALL BACK

By Fr. Terry Weber, St. Joseph's Catholic Church

“Fall Back,” a term we hear a lot at this time of year with Daylight Saving time change.

I remember as a little kid asking my parents how they knew when the clock should be changed and in what way. Keeping it simple, they tied it to the seasons. In Fall, you fall back an hour and in Spring, you spring forward an hour. It is one of those neutral terms, that could be used in a negative or a positive way.

My spiritual director liked to ask me if I have fallen back on any old habits that I had conquered at one time. It is easy to do. She also liked to ask if I needed a time of retreat, not surrendering or giving up but taking time out of the normal daily schedule to work on my spiritual life. Sister Jeremy was great about reminding me that the physical, mental and emotional life was always tied to our spiritual life. Together they make up the wholeness of our being.

If one is hurting or suffering, it affects all the other areas as well. She also shared that there are good habits, as well as bad habits. Sometimes we need to reconnect with what has been lost or forgotten.
